Galaxy S II for AT&T leaks through Samsung's Facebook photos

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S II for the AT&T network made a surprise appearance yesterday. To be dubbed the Samsung Attain, it was spotted in Samsung Singapore’s Facebook photos which were showing off the new dock for the device.

As you can see from the picture, the AT&T logo is prominently placed on the front. The keys below the display look different compared to the standard Galaxy S II. Instead of a mechanical Home button you now get a capacitive one and there is a dedicated search button as well.

While initially the device did seem like the Infuse 4G to us but then when we saw the side profile we noticed that the camera on this phone was jutting out of the case far more than the one on the Infuse 4G. In fact the camera on the Infuse 4G is completely flush with the body, unlike the one on the Galaxy S II. So the one you see above is undoubtedly the AT&T Attain.

For now, however, we have no information available on the launch date of the device but we will keep an eye out for that.

The Facebook-centric HTC Salsa gets its debut release

We saw HTC debut two new Facebook-centric devices back at MWC 2011, the QWERTY based Cha Cha and the unibodied HTC Salsa. The Salsa now looks like it'll making its way to stores with, first availability coming to India.

An Indian retailer already listed the HTC Salsa as available, where it's listed for 20,499 INR (a snip under $460 or around €316). The Salsa is the second one of the two Facebook-centric HTC announced back in February and so far it hasn't been available for sale. HTC Facebook-centric phones have a hardware Facebook button on the front that's context sensitive. We spoke about how it changes the way your interact with the device here, when we first heard about it just after MWC this year.

The Salsa comes with a 3.4" capacitive touch display (320x480 pixels) that's protected by Gorilla Glass. You also get microSD storage capabilities up to 32GB, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth (3.0), HSDPA and HSUPA support, a 5MP camera on the back and a front-facing VGA video call camera on the front all topped off with Android Gingerbread. The processor is currently sited as being clocked at 600MHz, but it's likely to jump to 800MHz by release to follow in the footsteps of the Cha Cha.

The retailer lists the HTC Salsa as available now and deliverable within four business days. And we guess it's only a matter of time before it gets to Europe. Do you plan on having a taste of the Salsa, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Vodafone planning on launching its own Facebook phone

There are some people who just can't have enough of social networking services. And to address to this ever growing clientele, we are seeing a rise in phones with social networking apps built-in. Considering the potential of this market, it seems Vodafone wants to be a part of it too and are now planning to launch their own Facebook phone.

The device pictured on the left bears strong resemblance to the HTC ChaCha, which too is a portrait QWERTY handset with a Facebook button. Except in case of Vodafone's handset, it's not running on Android or any kind of smartphone operating system as far as we know. It's a simple feature phone probably aimed at the lower end of the market.

There is no other information available about this handset, including its name, manufacturer, features, price or availability but we will keep an eye out for them. One thing's for sure though, if priced well, this device does have the potential to become incredibly successful among the Facebook addicts, particularly youngsters who would greatly appreciate a device like this at a low price.

Facebook Adds "Send" Button

Clicking the Send button brings up dialogue to share with an individual, or group, of friends. Recipients then get the message without it showing up on the sender's wall.

The button is currently on 50 early sites, but will likely spread across the Internet, such as the Like button. The Like button is now installed on over 10,000 sites a week and celebrated its first birthday last week.

As user's lists of "friends" have grown into the hundreds, including old school acquaintances, people met at parties, work colleagues, family, and people actually considered "friends," broadcasting universal "likes" has become trickier. The Send button addresses this problem.

It also makes it less likely that users will resort to e-mail for sending such material, further locking them into Facebook. Already, many people using Facebook's messaging instead of e-mail. Also, the recently introduced messaging feature that allows responses to Facebook messages directly from e-mail ensures that as much communication as possible flows through the social network.

Though it remains the champion of U.S. social networking, Facebook could face increasing pressure from Google, which recently unveiled its "+1" button, a sort of Like button for search results, and has tied all employee bonuses to the performance of the company's social networking initiatives this year.

Facebook is currently the second-most visited site in the U.S. according to web metrics provider Alexa, though it has displaced Google for the top spot before.

Nokia Facebook possible mobile merger

Nokia is working on a major deal with Facebook by offering a “placement” button on the main screen their phones, mainly the iPhone.

The deal is much bigger than just a placement though as there is speculation that the early discussions have involved Nokia purchasing a stake in Facebook.

The possible deal would give Facebook instant mobile distribution as Nokia is the world’s largest maker of mobile phones. A senior Nokia executive declined to go into details about the pact with Facebook: “There is talk of a partnership in the works… it’s safe to say we’re testing the waters and things still have to be worked out.”

Facebook has updated its iPhone app to version 3.4, bringing with it some new features for those who care and giving users the chance to unfriend people on the go if they've fallen out with them.

In what is no doubt likely to start a massive refining of friends, the new iPhone app allows you to ditch those that aren't in your good books at the press of a big shiny red button.

Of course it is not all about showing your unfriendly side. New to the mix are a map view for Places, the ability to check into Events that you’re attending and an improved News Feed inferface. There is also the promise of better notifications within the app.
