3gp mobile movies (The Undefeated)

“The Undefeated” is a slick one hour and 50 minute version of those political convention hagiographies (“A Man From Hope”), so it’s not exactly an objective take on its subject, former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. It’s just her and her friends “setting the record straight.”

But conservative documentarian Stephen K. Bannon (“Generation Zero”) makes a persuasive case that Palin was a more accomplished governor than the national media has ever let on and that she’s more of a “maverick” than we’ve been allowed to see. He captures some of the media firestorm that surrounded her upon her arrival on the national scene and the creation of her “media narrative” — naive, greedy, possibly corrupt and appealing to the nuttier elements of the GOP’s far right base. The film is designed to make her appear less alarming and as such, it works — until you start noticing what was left out.

Bannon uses Palin’s autobiography, “Going Rogue,” as both his inspiration and his structure, with snippets of her reading the audio book setting up the various “chapters” in this political story — “Act 1: The Servant’s Heart,” to “From Here I Can See November.”

Brannon accesses Alaskan TV news footage to show Palin’s early political career, her ongoing efforts to get “Big Oil” to drill in places where Exxon-Mobile had long had leases to do so, the natural gas pipeline she takes credit for (still un-built, which the film leaves out) and the corrupting power of oil over the state’s politicians before she took office. The coverage sampled here is overwhelmingly flattering.

In press conferences and interviews back then Palin comes off as earnest, politically savvy, a genuine populist whose down home nature and TV-ready good looks made her stand out in a big state with a tiny population. Plainly, whatever her own blunders as she stumbled onto the national stage, the political portrait of her that emerged was too narrow. She became the equivalent of a reality TV star painted in sinister tones by her and her fans’ favorite bugaboo, “the liberal media.”

But everything in “The Undefeated” is loaded, from its choice of endorsements to the choice of extreme voices in those rare moments when she is criticized. An opening three minute barrage of bile lumps everyone who found her lacking into the same pile as profane anonymous Internet commenters, shock jocks and gadfly comedian Bill Maher. There’s Sharon Osborne. But where are the credible critics who questioned her qualifications?

Her political allies sing her praises and do most of her burnishing for her – “Sarah stands for this” and “She’s a rock star” and “She’s an existential threat to the left.” But about these “endorsements – They aren’t spontaneous question-and-answer sessions with a wide assortment of critics and colleagues. They are mostly Alaska acolytes who appear to be performing their testimonials carefully staged and edited monologues directly to the camera. Thus, “The Undefeated” plays like an infomercial.

And as such, it’s an infomercial of almost comical omissions. Here’s what ISN’T in “The Undefeated” — Palin’s many many gaffes on the campaign trail in 2008, gaffes which continue today, her deer in the headlights moments during debates, her disastrous Katie Couric interview and her cash-in-quick reality TV soap opera family. The movie skims over the reasons she quit her governor’s job just as the going got really tough and glosses over the flood of ethic’s complaints that dogged her. There is no “Bridge to Nowhere.” You leave out that stuff and it casts doubt on what you’ve chosen to include and how you slanted that — her Alaskan record.

Since Bannon, a former Goldman Sachs investment banker, once made a documentary filled with Republicans who blamed the financial meltdown on assorted Democratic “liberal social policies” of the past 60 years and not on…Goldman Sachs — a healthy skepticism about his objectives and honesty is in order.

The film rightly gives Palin much of the credit for the Tea Party movement she opportunistically leapt onto in 2010. We see her pointing the finger at ethically challenged Alaska Republicans. But we don’t see Palin “standing with” the disgraced Senator Ted Stevens, just like any other party hack. The film misstates her popularity in Alaska and misleadingly twists energy data to convince us that what she did to push more drilling in Alaska is actually America’s energy independence solution.

And while there’s plenty of inspirational Tea Party footage scored with music to make you moist-eyed, there’s nothing about that group’s more controversial elements — the intolerance, conspiracy-mongering, the anti-intellectualism tinged with violent rhetoric.

There’s also no mention of Palin’s burgeoning media career — from “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” to her many connections to Fox News and the controversial commentator Glenn Beck. This is a far more credible reason for her quitting her governor’s job — cashing in. Afraid of how that looks?

There was a 1969 John Wayne movie which Rock Hudson led an exodus of unreconstructed Confederates as they fled south to Mexico rather than accept the government by Yankees in Washington at the end of the Civil War. Considering the audience this “Undefeated” is pandering to, that’s too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence.

Aaron Carter claims Michael Jackson dealt

"I miss Michael," Carter said. "I have spent such incredible times with him. I did things with him that nobody else did ... But I was also troubled about what he did to me."

Carter entered rehab in January after battling substance abuse issues for years. He checked into rehab for "emotional and spiritual issues," according to his manager Johnny Wright.

"He has chosen to enter a facility where he feels he will get the guidance and cleansing he needs," Wright said in a statement at the time. "Which in turn will help him on the music journey he's about to take."

"Yes, he gave me wine. I mean, I could have refused, but I was 15," Carter said when asked if Jackson provided him with alcohol. "As for drugs? He gave me cocaine. I felt weird about that and other stuff ... We spoke afterwards, hours and hours, on the phone. I admired Michael, but his behavior bothered me a lot."

In 2008, Carter was arrested in Texas for investigation of marijuana possession and in 2009 a report revealed that he owned more than $1 million in taxes.

Tag Heuer unveils LINK: Luxury, Precision and Android

Not all phones are created equal and we don't just mean hardware or software here. There are those phones that market themselves to the 'elite', usually toting a mix of expensive materials, hand built and precision manufactured parts and a four to seven figure price tag (such as these fine examples) that would make your eyes water.

Tag Heuer have already stepped into the phone market with their Meridiist line of handsets, all precision engineered and designed to reflect Tag's strong design language, but now they're bringing a new device to market, one that actually offers more than just a platinum back plate or a sapphire screen. The Tag Heuer LINK smartphone is a premium/luxury handset that right off the bat proves that you can have a luxury and everyday functionality, strangely a combination that has been sorely lacking in this market so far (excluding custom built iPhone 4's and so on).

The Tag Heuer LINK smartphone: Avant-garde communication

The LINK still ticks the boxes for the elite purchaser with material combinations that include steel, 18k rose gold or titanium paired with rubber, alligator skin or leather trim. As the video below shows the LINK also strongly maintains its watchmaker roots as well, with the SIM, USB and memory card ports hidden behind a hinged body panel locked in place by what appears to be a crown

Huawei's latest Ideos X1 sets foot in Portugal as Optimus StockholmHuawei's latest Ideos X1 sets foot in Portugal as Optimus Stockholm

Huawei specialize in supplying carriers worldwide with affordable handsets which are being sold with different names. The Chinese tech giant quietly released yet another low-cost Android device, this time in Portugal. It is called Optimus Stockholm, and is a version of Huawei's latest Ideos X1 droid.

It must be noted, that the Optimus Stockholm has no relation to the LG Optimus line of devices. The budget Android handset is named after the carrier which released it in Portugal - it is called Optimus as well.

Now on with the specs. For €99, you get a compact Android Froyo 2.2 device with last year's entry smartphone specs. The processor is the old Qualcomm MSM7225 which is clocked at 528 MHz. There is 256MB RAM, and 512MB ROM on board, along with a microSD card slot for further expansion. The screen is 2.8 inches with 240x320 resolution. The camera is 3.2MP, and there is full connectivity on board. A-GPS, digital compass and accelerometer complete the package which weighs only 90 grams.

We noticed the stock icons pictured on the screen of device have a nice 3D-ish effect and make the phone look seriously upscale at first. We suppose they won't be like that in real life.

Word on the street is that the same device will be available as Orange Stockholm on the Orange networks across Europe as well.

Webware which just not only imitates but also works like operating system for your Mobile. Glide is a web application designed to be run from desktop and mobile devices: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile.

The new “Glide OS 3.0” is a fairly complete Web-based desktop, with a word processor, a presentation app, a spreadsheet, e-mail, calendar, media players, and so on. Universal Mobile Phone PC suite ( Phone Manager ) for Linux

Most of us use our computers to backup all the contacts, messages and calendars. This is generally done with the “PC Suite”-like applications provided by the vendor. Some of the most popular ones are Sony Ericsson PC Suite (recently revamped as SE PC Companion), Nokia PC Suite and a few others.

They all do one single thing – synchronize contents from your phone with your PC. Most of these suites provided by the vendor are Windows-only ( or sometimes support Mac too ).

What if you are running your favourite Linux distro? Do you boot Windows to use these suites? Or try running them from WINE (which probably fails to work)?

There is actually an open source phone manager for Linux. It’s called Gammu (strange name, I know!). Gammu is actually a command-line tool to manage your phone. A fine-crafted GUI is also available. It’s called Wammu.

With Wammu, you can do almost all the things the vendor-supplied PC suites offer: View call logs, contacts, calendar, messages; backup all your phone data and much more!

Mobile phone PC Suite Linux

Does my phone supports it?

Most of the phones are supported by Wammu. For the complete list, see – List of phones supported by Gammu

Installation

Installing Wammu is very easy. Just open terminal, and type the following:

Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install gammu wammu

Fedora: sudo yum install gammu wammu

Using Wammu

Wammu requires additional permissions to listen on the USB ports. So we recommend you starting Wammu as a root user from Terminal.

Just type

Ubuntu and Fedora: sudo wammu

Then connect your phone with USB cable or Bluetooth and select the proper port (you might have to try all listed there).

Note – Wammu cannot scan the ports unless you start it under root user. You must always start wammu as a root user as above

P.S: Even if your phone isn’t listed on the website, but your vendor name is, it is very likely that Wammu supports your phone. My W595 wasn’t listed but Wammu readily connected with all the features activated.

Huawei Ideos U8150: Android 2.2 Phone Personal Opinion and Hands on Review

Android is quite a rage now in Smartphone market. We got to try our hands on Huawei’s Android 2.2 Smartphone – Ideos launched recently in India. People who always want a Phone easy on pocket with average features and that too Android, then Ideos is best bargain.

Android 2.2 Phone under 10K, 2.8 inch capacitive touchscreen with fair display clarity, Average Photo and Video capturing quality, 3G, WiFi and colorful back covers could be some tags to define what Huawei Ideos is all about. Let’s go in detail about each aspect of the device.

Huawei Ideos Review - Front

Display and Touchscreen

2.8 inches with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels which is not that enough. TFT Screen, though has wide angle viewing but it is difficult to operate in bright sunlight.

Touchscreen response is fair; You may have to press instead of just tapping and things become worst while scrolling. But, there is a good thing that you can move on screen with help of 4 way joystick button. May be Huawei was aware of this so, they introduced both touch and buttons.

Interface

Don’t know whether Huawei developed their own User Interface but it looked like Android Stock User Interface. On Homescreen, Widgets can be added just by keeping tapped at one point. App shortcuts can be added to homescreen by keeping tapped on icon in drawer and deleted by swiping them to bottom of screen.

Gallery view however is not that attractive but simple and importantly, you CANNOT browse photos by sliding finger to see next.

Web Browsing and Maps becomes mess without Pinch Zoom support.

Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon Game Pack

Renowned mobile hardware giants Qualcomm have just announced their Snapdragon Game Pack, an optimisation program with a suite of more than 100 mobile gaming titles already under its belt, designed for the latest Snapdragon enabled devices. Qualcomm are releasing the pack in light of the success they've had with their processing and graphical mobile chipsets which already feature in over 125 different devices and with a further 250 more in development from OEMs and operators across the globe, they have a lot to look forward to.

It's also a means for Qualcomm to buddy up with a host of developers and publishers making titles with the Snapdragon infrastructure in mind. Their press release carries praise for all manner of mobile gaming publishers including; Gameloft, Digital Chocolate, NAMCO BANDAI Games America, Glu and a whole bunch more. The biggest pull for the Game Pack is the promise of greater things to come. The current list of 100 titles is sure to grow and the quality of mobile gaming is certain to develop and improve as time goes on.

Drifting behind a Lamborghini in Asphalt 6: Adrenaline

With mobile gaming experiences already starting to resemble, equal and even surpass what we've come to expect from dedicated mobile and household gaming consoles (we're looking at you NGP), the appeal for gaming on your phone will just keep getting stronger. Qualcomm have said 60% of smartphone users regularly play games and as the next generation of quad-core Adreno GPUs get thrown together with the upper echelons of Snapdragon performance, that percentage will no doubt increase as more and more demanding and engrossing games join the ranks of the Game Pack.

The Snapdragon-optimized games themselves will be made available to the Android community via Android Market and through developer's own stores and the hope is that this will present opportunities for devs to also generate revenue from pre-installs of games as well as market-based games sales.

Qualcomm are responsible for the hardware behind some already impressive looking/running games like Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD, Assassin's Creed HD, NOVA HD, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X HD and Real Soccer 2011 HD to name but a few.

Check the source for the full press release from Qualcomm themselves and follow this link here to see the full list of Snapdragon-optimized games you can already get your hands on.

Bada 2.0.1 OS screenshots leak, UI change imminent

Here is something interesting. A new Bada OS is coming, but until today we haven't heard a thing about it. But now you can see the first batch of Bada 2.0.1 screenshots coming from a beta OS release running on a Samsung Wave II.

We've already seen Bada 2.0 in action, demoed at the MWC 2011 in February but back then it looked just like Bada 1.0. Obviously Samsung has decided to change the UI concept a bit along the way and Bada users will be getting the 2.0.1 instead.

Besides some new looks, the homescreen UI concept has changed as well - there are only two homescreen panes now. The first one is the widget section (marked with a rectangle), while the second holds your regular shortcuts. The widgets section is scrollable so you still get all the varied content.

Bada 2.0.1 OS

The icons have also changed so you can now fit four of them in a row. Samsung just made them smaller and they are more condensed too.

Bada 2.0.1 OS

The Bada 2.0.1 OS screenshots are from the S8530 Wave II so the new Bada should be compatible with the older devices when it becomes available.

Last but not least, we managed to confirm these as genuine with Samsung reps but we couldn't get a further comment.

NVIDIA Kal El project demoed, to make dual-core CPUs obsolete

NVIDIA is on a roll. After introducing Tegra Zone - the Android app which offers the users suggestions which are optimized for its dual-core Tegra chips, the company demoed its latest work in progress - project Kal El.

In case you haven't read our recent post on the matter, project Kal El is the name of NVIDIA's quad-core mobile super chip. It will also bear the Tegra moniker, and its performance will be, well, unbelievable.

As you can see from the video, the "Glowball" gaming app is running on a Honeycomb tablet. What's really fascinating in the video, is the fact that the moving ball is the dynamic light source in the app. There are no preloaded animations and everything in the gaming environment responds naturally just like in real life.

Interestingly enough, the dual-core processors just began to roll out as mass market devices. We haven't even stopped raving about them yet and here we go - NVIDIA's latest project makes them look obsolete.

It is mentioned in the video that the retail version of the quad-core mobile CPU will be up to 30% faster that the unit from the demo. There is no release date yet but we all hope it will be sometimes this year.

notorious big and lil kim

TEMPLE, Texas — Before her life came to a violent end somewhere between Temple and Belton in August 1890, Cora McMahan had developed a salacious reputation everywhere she lived.

She was found by a passer-by who reported that McMahan was locked in an embrace with her love interest, notorious outlaw Pick Wiseman. She had been shot once with a shotgun at close range. Wiseman was shot 27 times.

Days earlier he was found not guilty in a murder case in which he was accused of gunning down a lawman.

The man who found the couple said their bodies were in a buggy, its horses tied to a fencepost.

Stories of the killings, which went unsolved, were printed in newspapers throughout the nation. In those accounts, McMahan was identified as a prostitute.

A new book, "The Oldest Profession in Texas: Waco's Legal Red Light District," written by James Plyant and Sherri Knight, reveals that McMahan was much more than a simple prostitute: she was a woman of influence in the brothel community.

By the time McMahan was 18 she was a madam in Brenham. She was illiterate. Tax records indicate her real name was Cora McGreal, Plyant said.

The way the prostitution trade in Texas worked in the late 1800s is madams established permanent residency in a city and the prostitutes traveled a circuit living in different cities and sometimes taking different names, Plyant said.

Perhaps McMahan's greatest success as the leader of a house of ill repute came during her time in Waco, where she is believed to have met Pick Wiseman.

Prostitution was actually legal within the Waco city limits during the time McMahan was running her brothel.

The Waco City Council, acting against state law, passed an ordinance that regulated the sex trade in the city, Knight said, adding that prostitutes were required to display their licenses and to have regular exams by a doctor to prevent the spread of venereal disease.

"It was kind of a farce," Knight said. "I doubt many men came in asking to see a certificate."

Even though prostitution was quasi-legal in Waco, county officials still made arrests based on state law.

In 1880, McMahan was found guilty on five counts of operating a "disorderly house." Each count carried a $100 fine.

"She wasn't really all that well liked in Waco," Knight said.

"Her bordellos had a tendency to draw police, and she was feisty."

Even though she wasn't well liked, McMahan still never served jail time for the convictions. At the request of several prominent Wacoans, including the county judge, Gov. O.M. Roberts pardoned her in 1881.

"I've never seen anything like that before," Pylant said about McMahan being pardoned before ever serving time.

McMahan had enough success operating her bordello in that environment that she branched out and opened a dancehall in a former military institute she had purchased.

In 1883, McMahan was found guilty of assault with intent to commit murder for a shooting death that happened at her dancehall. Her punishment was a $250 fine.

It is believed that McMahan got together with Wiseman in 1888, the same year she moved to Bell County.

Within two years of living here, McMahan and Wiseman became notorious characters in Bell County.

"She quickly became hated," Plyant said. "It wasn't the same climate as Waco."

Although McMahan mingled and did business among some of the most unsavory people in Bell County during the late 1800s, she apparently had a taste for fine things.

Upon her death an inventory of her estate listed lace curtains, vases, English china, marble tables and walnut furniture.

Her son, James McMahan, claimed the estate even though he had shielded his family from his mother's notorious background, Plyant said.

James McMahan appears to have avoided the same notorious reputation as his mother. He died quietly in the Los Angeles area in 1949 on what was his 80th birthday, Plyant said.

candice crawford and tony romo

Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo, 31, is officially a married man, ladies. The serial monogamist finally settled down with 24-year-old beauty queen and local news reporter Candice Crawford on Saturday afternoon in Dallas, TX, People confirms.

The wedding took place at Arlington Hall, a historical mansion at picturesque Lee Park. Rental prices start at $3,000 just for the evening reception. Among the famous friends in attendance were the Dallas Cowboys, their owner Jerry Jones, and Candice's big brother, "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford.
Jones had to get special permission to attend the affair, because the NFL lockout prohibits players and owners from talking football. That doesn't mean they can't talk romance, though, right?

Candice's engagement ring was an 8-carat yellow diamond, surrounded by one carat of smaller diamonds. Bridesmaids wore Badgley Mishka.

The reception was planned by wedding planner Todd Fiscus, who has some experience with showing athletes a good time - he also planned Eli Manning's wedding. Most importantly, he knows how to feed some seriously hungry dudes. "We did lots of man food," he says about the menu, which included pizza and short ribs. "I have a lot of football players to feed."

Out-of-town guests scored some serious loot with an impressive gift bag that included a Neiman Marcus gift card, gourmet cookies, a "Mix of the Month" CD by DJ Lucy Wrubel, Moet champagne, Dude Sweet Chocolates, gourmet popcorn, chips and salsa, pecans, Voss water, and Kiehl's beauty and body products.

ipl final live streaming

And so we’re finally here, at the culmination of the biggest cricketing fiesta of the year – the 14 contestants have been whittled down to just two surviving combatants and now it all comes down to one massive game which will decide who will be the IPL season 4 champions.

Defending champions and red-hot favorites the Chennai Super Kings will go into the match feeling supremely confident and with the huge psychological boost that home advantage offers, yet the formidable Royal Challengers Bangalore will be ready to give it everything they’ve got – having come this far, they are not going to back down without a fight.

Chennai, who have won all seven league games at their Chidambaram Stadium this year, will be further bolstered by reports that the low and slow conditions of the pitch suit their style of play perfectly.

Yet Bangalore didn’t get this far by being pushovers, and they will be far from daunted by today’s task – with one of the best captains and some of the biggest hitters in the league to call upon, we can look forward to a final that promises action, entertainment and drama all the way, and very possibly the chance of a big upset.

Don’t miss the IPL Season 4 final! Stay here and follow all the action with Everything PR, or catch the game live on one of the links provided below – Enjoy!

Team News

After they only just scraped into second place in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings underlined their supremacy by staking their place in the final at the first attempt with a nailbiting comeback chase to beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Struggling at 7/2 the magnificent Suresh Raina smashed a superb 73 not out as the Super Kings roared back into the game to win with just two balls left.

That performance was just the kind of thing we have come to expect from Chennai, who simply never give up and have immense belief in their ability to take on and beat anyone.

The defending champions are consistently among the top performing teams in the IPL, as evidenced by the fact they have qualified for the play-offs three times in four seasons. One of the key factors to their success has been their ability to retain the core players in their team, while others constantly succumb to the temptation to chop and change with little or no effect. The regular presence of star players like Dhoni, Raina, Hussey and Morkel has seen Chennai reap rich rewards in the form of a stability and togetherness that no other side can match.

The Super Kings stars not only reward the clubs loyalty with fantastic performances week in, week out, but they have also proven to be excellent mentors for upcoming stars like Murali Vijay and Subramaniam Badrinath.

One thing that sets Chennai apart from the rest is undoubtedly what’s been labeled the “Dhoni factor”. A born leader, Dhoni is the epitome of composure he leads by example, he is fantastic at motivating his troops and he is a master of tactics. Not for nothing do you get to captain a world cup-winning India team and lead Chennai to the IPL and Champions League double. Dhoni’s record as skipper is simply superb, something other sides are deeply envious of.

However, as important as Dhoni is to the side, Chennai are blessed with a wealth of match-winning talents. If Hussey has a bad game, Raina comes up with a sublime performance, and if Raina falls, Dhoni comes in. And even if all the batsmen falter, the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Albie Morkel can be relied upon to carry the team to success again and again.

Chennai possess a belief in themselves that is quite unmatched by anyone else, and this, together with their stability, their loyalty to each other and their never-say-die attitude makes them a phenomenon to behold. It’s little wonder they are unbeaten at home this season, and quite rightly tipped as red-hot favorites to carry of the IPL title yet again.

But for all the accolades you can throw Chennai’s way, there is no denying that Royal Challengers Bangalore make for a highly formidable opponent who will make the Super Kings fight tooth and nail in today’s IPL final.

As Gayle has proved again and again this season, once he gets going there is simply no stopping Bangalore – as we saw just last night when his tremendous 89 led the team to victory over Mumbai. Bangalore’s bowlers also responded brilliantly, skipper Vettori leading the charge with 3 wickets as they stopped Mumbai in their tracks.

Bangalore’s fielders were superb as well, producing a performance littered with acrobatic stops and audacious catches that stopped the Mumbai machine dead in its tracks.

Without a doubt though, everything revolves around the outstanding Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Even though Virat Kohli has put in some outstanding innings for the Challengers this year, it is Gayle who has been the team’s engine, bulldozing everything that opponents can throw at him. Even his bowling has proved to be a tremendous asset, picking up several key wickets, stemming the run rates of the opposition and thrilling us all with his celebration jigs out on the pitch.

However, it would be unfair to label Bangalore as a one man show – they’re not. Virat Kohli is the perfect opening foil for Gayle, and more than capable of inflicting serious damage against opponents. Meanwhile, Sreenath Aravind and Zaheer Khan are one of the most potent front pairs in the league, and their efforts are backed up by the highly effective if unspectacular performances of captain Vettori.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will no doubt have a simple enough game plan. They need Gayle to have a big innings once again, and they need Aravind and Khan to get some early wickets – if both of these can be done, they will shake the hosts and may just be able to make things difficult for them. It will take a supreme effort to stem Chennai’s run flow, something that will take equally brilliant bowling and fielding if they are to pull it off.

It’s going to be a tough match for Bangalore however you look at it – but if anyone has a chance to pull off a miracle, it’s Gayle and his cohorts.

TheSportsCampus has made that possible here (PDF). There is lots more info on mobile streams and other methods of being made aware of game scores etc., here as well. As a last resort, you might also try LiveCricket 360, it’s a low quality feed, but it seems to work.

Gil

We're very sad to bring this news: Jamie Byng, Gil Scott-Heron's publisher in the UK, has tweeted that the poet and songwriter passed away today.

"Just heard the very sad news that my dear friend and one of the most inspiring people I've ever met, the great Gil Scott-Heron, died today.

Gil Scott-Heron's death is NOT a rumour. I just called by Dorothy who is staying with Aunt Mimi in NY to tell me the news. I'm so sad."

Gil

As confirmed by a publicist for his record label, Gil Scott-Heron, the singer-songwriter and poet, has died. He was 62.

Influential in R&B, spoken word, and hip-hop, Scott-Heron had a strong run of albums in the 1970s. He wrote the song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and the phrase entered the cultural lexicon after appearing on his 1970 album Small Talk at 125th & Lennox. Scott-Heron later battled drug problems and was incarcerated for a period during the 2000s, but he returned to music in 2010 and released the acclaimed I'm New Here followed by the Jamie xx collaboration We're New Here earlier this year. Scott-Heron continued to record through the 1970s and early '80s, before taking a lengthy hiatus. He briefly returned to the studio for 1994's Spirits. That album featured the track "Message to the Messengers," in which Scott-Heron cautions the hip-hop generation that arose in his absence to use its newfound power responsibly. He has been cited as a key influence by many in the hip-hop community -- such as rapper-producer Kanye West, who closed his platinum-selling 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with a track built around a sample of Scott-Heron's voice. Gil Scott-Heron, the poet and recording artist whose syncopated spoken style and mordant critiques of politics, racism and mass media in pieces like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” made him a notable voice of black protest culture in the 1970s and an important early influence on hip-hop, died on Friday at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 62 and had been a longtime resident of Harlem.

His death was announced in a Twitter message on Friday night by his British publisher, Jamie Byng, and confirmed early Saturday by an American representative of his record label, XL. The cause was not immediately known, although The Associated Press reported that he was admitted to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center after becoming ill upon his return from a trip to Europe.

Mr. Scott-Heron often bristled at the suggestion that his work had prefigured rap. “I don’t know if I can take the blame for it,” he said in an interview last year with the music Web site The Daily Swarm. He preferred to call himself a “bluesologist,” drawing on the traditions of blues, jazz and Harlem renaissance poetics.

Yet, along with the work of the Last Poets, a group of black nationalist performance poets who emerged alongside him in the late 1960s and early ’70s, Mr. Scott-Heron established much of the attitude and stylistic vocabulary that would characterize the socially conscious work of early rap groups like Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions and has remained part of the DNA of hip-hop by being sampled by stars like Kanye West.

“You can go into Ginsberg and the Beat poets and Dylan, but Gil Scott-Heron is the manifestation of the modern word,” Chuck D, the leader of Public Enemy, told The New Yorker in 2010. “He and the Last Poets set the stage for everyone else.”

Mr. Scott-Heron’s career began with a literary rather than a musical bent. He was born in Chicago on April 1, 1949, and was reared in Tennessee and New York, and his precocious work as a writer won him a scholarship to the Fieldston School in the Bronx. Following in the footsteps of Langston Hughes, he went to the historically black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and he wrote his first novel at 19, a murder mystery called “The Vulture.” Shortly thereafter, he published a book of verse, “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox,” and a second novel, “The Nigger Factory.”

Mr. Scott-Heron turned to music to reach a wider audience, working at first with a college friend, Brian Jackson. Their first album, “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox,” was released in 1970 on Flying Dutchman, a small label, and included a live recitation of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” accompanied by conga and bongo drums. A second version of that piece, recorded with a full band including the jazz bassist Ron Carter, was released on Mr. Scott-Heron’s second album, “Pieces of a Man,” in 1971.

“The Revolution” established Mr. Scott-Heron as a rising star of the black cultural left, and its cool, biting ridicule of a nation anesthetized by mass media has resonated with the socially disaffected of various stripes — campus activists, media theorists, coffeehouse poets — for four decades. Using a barrage of pop-culture references, Mr. Scott-Heron derided society’s dominating forces as well as the gullibly dominated:

The revolution will not be brought to you by the Schaefer Award Theater and will not star Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen or Bullwinkle and Julia.

The revolution will not give your mouth sex appeal.

The revolution will not get rid of the nubs.

The revolution will not make you look five pounds thinner, because the revolution will not be televised, brother.

Other pieces, like “New York Is Killing Me,” “Home Is Where the Hatred Is,” “Angel Dust” and “We Almost Lost Detroit” dealt bluntly with poverty, drug addiction, racism and the lurking catastrophes in industrialized civilization.

During the 1970s, Mr. Scott-Heron was seen as a prodigy with significant potential, although he never achieved wide popularity. He recorded 13 albums between 1970 and 1982, and was one of the first acts that the music executive Clive Davis signed after starting Arista Records in 1974. In 1979, Mr. Scott-Heron performed at the antinuclear MUSE benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden, and in 1985 he appeared on the anti-apartheid album “Sun City,” which also featured Bono, Keith Richards, Miles Davis and Steven Van Zandt.

By the mid-1980s, Mr. Scott-Heron had begun to fade, and in later years he struggled publicly with addiction. Since 2001, he had been convicted twice for cocaine possession, and he served a sentence at Rikers Island in New York for parole violation. The writer of the New Yorker profile in 2010 reported witnessing Mr. Scott-Heron smoking crack, and referred to him living in a cavelike apartment in Harlem and being so dismayed by his physical appearance that he avoided mirrors.

Information on survivors was not immediately available.

Despite Mr. Scott-Heron’s public problems, he remained an admired cult figure who made occasional concert appearances and was sought after as a collaborator. Last year, XL released “I’m New Here,” his first album of new material in 16 years, which was produced by Richard Russell, a producer of electronic dance music who had written a letter to Mr. Scott-Heron and met him at Rikers Island in 2006.

Reviews for the album inevitably referred to Mr. Scott-Heron as the “godfather of rap,” but he made it clear he had different tastes.

“It’s something that’s aimed at the kids,” he once said. “I have kids, so I listen to it. But I would not say it’s aimed at me. I listen to the jazz station.”

wipeout hd and the last guy

WipeoutIntheZone_Screenshot1

I can’t hide it anymore. Wipeout is one of my guilty pleasures. The ABC reality program is an American interpretation of a Japanese game shows like Takeshi’s Castle. Contestants run through a ridiculous obstacle course, and if they do it fast enough, they’ll move onto other rounds and eventually compete to win $50,000 in the Wipeout Zone. It may seem trite but add in a cocktail or two and the show can be hilarious.

When it comes to bringing the competition to video games, the Xbox 360 and its Kinect sensor is the ideal set-up. I had a chance to play the Wipeout In the Zone the other day at an Activision event in San Francisco. I had some hands-on time and came away with these thoughts:

WipeoutIntheZone_Screenshot3

IT LET YOU GET CLOSE TO THE SHOW WITHOUT FALLING IN THE MUD: The game supports up to four players, and the levels are done via episodes. There are nine in all and three rounds that generally follows the outline of the show. (Yes, I know the TV show consists of four rounds.) There’s a qualifying round with the big balls. A second round that sometimes has a theme (Yes, Bruiser Ball makes the cut.). Finally, there’s the finale — the Wipeout Zone replete with lasers, special effects and fire.

To add to the interaction, the second player can use the controller and toss balls at her rival crossing the stage. If she hits him, the player’s avatar trips up and could possibly fall down. As in the show, each misstep comes with a replay that shows different angles of the flop and adds snarky commentary by hosts John Anderson and John Henson.

Wipeout In The Zone even includes Jill Wagner who will interview players before they go to the course. Players can move their arms and legs and they’re Xbox Avatar will reflect that movement, so you can go as goofy as you want during the precourse talk.

Speaking of characters, players can choose from their own or pick from custom-made Avatars of the hosts, Wagner or the producer Matt Kunitz. When they pick folks from the show, they’ll do some banter. The crew did 2,000 lines of dialogue for the game, so I have high hopes that it won’t get recycled too often.

HOW DOES IT PLAY? I didn’t spend a whole lot of time with the title, but I did tackle the qualifying round. You move by running place, and you’ll have to keep the momentum to dodge the hammers that burst through the doors. The next obstacle was a spinning wheel with spokes. To advance, I had to jump over them by physically jumping and letting the Kinect read that movement.

After that, I found myself facing the Sucker Punch. But like a lot of the obstacles, this one is altered slightly. Instead of pretending to grab handholds and maneuver across the wall, I had to jump on a moving platform and dodge the punches. I had to duck and shimmy away. The camera changes perspective momentarily for this, and when I reached the end, I hoped across rather easily.

The Big Balls were next and surprisingly enough the developer did a decent job translating Wipeout’s most famous obstacle. The Motivator can push you across and then you’ll bounce in the air. You’ll have to lean left or right to bound off the other balls until you reach the end. It’s weird but it works and it’s mandatory that you get across. There’s no swimming to the next contraption. You keep on doing it until you pass.

Lastly, I dealt with the Fling Swing. It was the easiest of the obstacles. All I had to do was run in place really fast as the bar swung by. It’s all based on timing. Eventually, I reached the end and penguin slid to finishing point. My time was a little over a minute. Best of all? I wasn’t even wet. The game seems to be a decent facsimile of the show. Will it replace it? I don’t think so, but it looks like a good diversion for fans who have to wait between seasons.

The Wine Loft

While I enjoy a good hearty dinner, tapas are also a favorite of mine at cocktail hour. The key is to find a place that does them just right.

The Wine Loft at Pier Village in Long Branch is one of many locations across the country, with a menu specific to each one. I went here recently with my mom and aunts, looking for a good place to relax at 5 p.m. on a Sunday.

What drew us in was the happy hour special, daily from 4-7, offering half-price wine and $5 Belvedere cocktails. I started with a glass of Pinot Grigio while we browsed the menu, figuring out the best spread to split between four people.

Their “small plates” menu seems easy to choose from, but really everything sounded good. We ordered the trio of spreads with hummus, babganoush, and tomato bruschetta served with slices of bread on the side. The tomato bruschetta and hummus together was delicious.

We also split the baked brie en croute, served with vanilla infused honey, spiced pecans, a balsamic reduction, strawberries, and the same sliced bread to spead on the warm brie. The combination of the balsamic reduction, vanilla and brie was very interesting and as a brie lover, it was one of the best servings I have had.

The Wine Bar Pie is your basic crispy bar pie, with italian sausage, roasted red peppers, and fresh mozarella, which we opted for much to our delight. We almost ordered the sliders, grass-fed organic beef, Irish cheddar cheese, and curry mustard. They also have shrimp cocktail, a cheese plate, jumbo lump crab cake, salmon, a surf and turf entrée, and even a baby rack of ribs.

The Wine Loft is typically a tapas restaurant, but some of the entrees could be combined for a wonderful dinner. It may be hard to go to a different location with the great happy hour they offer, plus they have some outdoor seating, along with bar seating and a loungy seating area near the bar.

As far as their extensive wine list? Wine Spectator gave them an “Award of Excellence” in 2010.
