Verizon Offers $50 Unlimited Prepaid Plan
The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier's "unleashed" plan gives customers unlimited calling and texting for just $50 a month, which is significantly lower than its current $95 prepaid plan. But the plan still doesn't compare to offerings from regional rivals MetroPCS and Cricket, which charge $40.

The new plan may keep AT&T at bay, for now. Earlier this month, A&T introduced its first prepaid Android smartphone, the LG Thrive for $180.

Verizon and AT&T, which now sell essentially the same Apple products, will have to compete on the quality of their networks and the price of their service plans.

Once Verizon got the iPhone as well in February, AT&T cut the price of its iPhone 3G to $50 and started rolling out deals like the LG Thrive.

A cheap prepaid plan could bring Verizon the good press it needs after suffering a 4G network outage earlier this week.

AT&T, which threatens to displace Verizon as the top carrier, is proving to be a formidable foe, with its planned $39 billion merger with T-Mobile. While this prepaid option may not make much difference after the merger, it does heat up the battle for both sides until then.

So far Verizon's $50 plan is only available in Florida and Southern California, but the company plans to extend its offering nationwide soon.

Verizon Delays Droid Charge Following 4G Outage

The Basking Ridge, N.J.-based carrier didn't confirm the delay was linked to the outage, but selling the Droid Charge right now would be anticlimactic given its nationwide, two-day 4G outage. The wireless carrier says it's working hard to restore the high-speed connection, but gives no word on when the network or the phone will be ready to go.

The 4G mishap and subsequent phone delay could cost Verizon in its fight against AT&T. With both carriers selling the same marquee Apple products, they're competing largely on network quality. Verizon rolled out its LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, high-speed network last year and is well ahead of AT&T's 4G efforts -- but when the network is dark, that doesn't count for much.

Verizon can't afford such mistakes, as number-two carrier AT&T is poised to merge with T-Mobile in a $39 billion deal. AT&T will be able to build its own 4G network using T-Mobile's spectrum if the deal goes through, meaning Verizon may soon find itself a much larger foe than it's used to.

Once the network issues are surmounted, it's likely the Charge will do well, as it offers an powerful 1-gigahertz dual-core chip, a 4.3-inch touch screen display and 8-megapixel camera. The Charge can also share 4G connections with up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices, and allows users to buy films and TV shows on Samsung's Media Hub.

Verizon sold 260,000 4G HTC Thunderbolt phones in less than a month last quarter plus another 240,000 4G devices.

Apple, Google Tracking Debate Intensifies

Apple and Google's location-tracking problems continued full-steam this week, as Apple's CEO Steve Jobs admitted the company made mistakes in handling geolocation data.

Apple maintains that two bugs were found to be gathering data from the iPhone and iPad, and promised to fix them immediately.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company is handling lawsuits from consumers, as well as criticism from House Republicans, state officials and even South Korea for failing to inform people of the issue.

Google, too, opened up about the matter, explaining how it encrypts data to keep it safe. Nevertheless, the Internet search giant was sued by disgruntled Android owners for not saying something sooner.

Microsoft came out looking like the winner in this debacle. The software giant preemptively declared how it manages its own secure location data, winning itself a much-needed image boost.

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile all ran for cover, telling federal regulators they abide by laws, but can't do anything to stop Apple or Google from collecting data triangulated from their cell towers.

In addition to mobile devices, both Apple and Google admitted they also track computers.

Verizon's 4G LTE network back in action

Fear not, Verizon 4G LTE users, the nation's largest carrier has announced via Twitter that its 4G network is once again operational after being out since yesterday morning. Scattered reports have been bouncing around this morning that different areas have had access restored, but now it looks like the entire network is back up. Now, back to enjoying your speedy 4G and whatever you do with it.

Verizon iPhone review

The Verizon iPhone 4 is an interesting product for Engadget to review. Firstly, it's not exactly a new device (not in any outwardly noticeable way). From design, down to its CPU, RAM, and even cost, this iPhone is the same as the AT&T model... save for that one small but really important thing: it's got a CDMA radio inside. The device is also somewhat tricky to review based on its software, since we've all been using (and even took a deep look at) iOS 4.2 for quite some time. So for us the task is to make clear the differences between these two devices and their networks. Now that's a little easier, because we're sure you have the same questions as us. What are calls like? How are the data rates? Is service notably improved or different than AT&T's? Most importantly, if you're currently a frustrated iPhone 4 owner, does it make sense to make the switch? We're going to answer all those queries (and more), so read on for a full review of the Verizon iPhone 4!


Hardware

As we said in the intro, there isn't much of a hardware story to tell here. If you've read our review of the AT&T model, you'll know that we think the design and build of the iPhone 4 is best in class by a longshot. Of course, editors at Engadget have had a lot more time to spend with these devices, and some of our opinions have changed slightly over time. For instance, when we first tested the AT&T model, we lauded the glass and metal housing of the phone, but we didn't realize how easily that design made the phone slip out of your hands... and potentially onto a hard surface where it can easily break. More than a few folks at Engadget have smashed the backs of their phones due to accidental drops. There's no denying that the iPhone 4 is beautiful to look at, but we highly recommend a bumper or case -- especially if you tend to juggle a lot of things at once.

While the phone does basically look identical on the outside, there are a few notable changes. The first of those changes -- and most pronounced -- is the shifting of the iPhone's antenna notches (the little black bands that intersect the frame of the device). On the Verizon version, there are four slits which are symmetrical -- two on the top right and left, and two along the bottom. Apple's Tim Cook told us that the move is all about making the new CDMA chipset play nice with the antenna design. There's no indication that any changes (or improvements) have been made to the underlying antenna structure. And conspiracy theorists take note: in low connectivity settings, we could get both the AT&T phone and the Verizon phone to dip slightly in bars if we covered the bottom half of the devices with our hands. We did not see any noticeable change in call quality or data quality.

Apple has also slightly shifted the mute switch and volume buttons to accommodate the antenna changes, and of course there's no SIM slot. That may not seem like a big deal, but if you already own an iPhone 4 and are switching, your case might not fit the new design (in fact, it's likely that it won't). Apple has issued a "universal" case for both models -- but that means you're shelling out more dough.

Overall, the phone is as handsome to look at and use as it was before... but what did you expect?

Internals

Just as with the external look and feel, nothing has notably changed inside the phone save for the radios. You still have Apple's powerful A4 CPU chugging alongside 512MB of RAM, the incredible 960 x 640 IPS Retina Display, and all of the rest of the iPhone 4's stock gear: 16GB or 32GB of storage, WiFi (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and all the rest. Just like the previous version, you've also got the iPhone standard ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, and three-axis gyroscope. What it doesn't have, of course, is a GSM radio -- instead there's a CDMA (EV-DO Rev. A) chip onboard. Is it still a feature-packed powerhouse? In a word: yes.

And if you're thinking about the display and camera performance, in our tests it was, unsurprisingly, exact to the current AT&T / GSM model. It makes sense, but just in case you're wondering, it continues to take pretty handsome photos and great looking 720p video.

Phone / reception / sound quality

As you would expect, this is basically the main course when it comes to the Verizon iPhone 4. The troubles that AT&T has had with reception and dropped calls on the iPhone are legendary, and even if not 100 percent of the issues lie with the carrier, there's most definitely a belief that the company's GSM network simply isn't equipped to handle the traffic devices like the iPhone have created. It's probably not necessary to say that this has created an enormous amount of frustration amongst iPhone users in America -- to the point that the idea of bad or dropped calls on the device has become a bit of a meme in pop culture, leaving Apple the butt of a joke it certainly hasn't been laughing along with.

At the launch event for the Verizon version of the phone, carrier execs made a pretty big deal not only about the larger and more reliable network, but the fact that they were "ready" for the onslaught of new iPhone users and customers switching from AT&T. The indication is that Big Red has every intention of not getting caught in the same mess their competition has found itself in.

So, does the phone exhibit more favorable behavior in regards to dropped / failed calls? The answer is yes -- with a caveat. We had many, many perfectly connected and sustained calls while on the Verizon iPhone (many times during testing we actually had to switch from our AT&T device to the Verizon device just to complete the call). After a couple of days of use, the fear that normally sets in about five minutes into a connected call with an AT&T iPhone all but disappeared, and we found ourselves wanting to have longer talks and not worrying so much about the potential for dropped and interrupted calls.

But on to that caveat. While the phone did connect much more reliably and consistently, it wasn't impervious to broken connections and sound quality issues. In areas where we had a weak signal, or when moving around, we experienced call interference (our callers noted this as well), and in two instances, we did drop a call when moving from one place to another (clearly an area with less Verizon juice).

Let's be clear here, however. Calls were consistently connected and uninterrupted, far more often than our AT&T calls in the same time period in similar locations. There were sound quality issues (it seemed to be happening more on our outgoing audio than incoming), but they were few and far between according to our friends and family. Overall, our level of confidence in the phone's ability to handle one of its main tasks went way, way up during our testing. If you've been looking for relief from your woes of dropped or failed calls -- right now the Verizon iPhone is making a very serious case for itself. Keep in mind, however, that this network has yet to be hit with the traffic of millions of new iPhones, but given that Verizon is already pushing tons of Android devices into the market, we're not so sure that it's going to be the kind of mess it's been for AT&T.

So -- this will solve your calling issues for the most part, but is that the only part of the equation you need to think about? Not really.

There are a few things you'll need to know about how the Verizon iPhone handles calls differently from AT&T. Firstly, you can't do 3G data and voice at the same time (but you knew this, Engadget reader!). We didn't find ourselves missing the feature very much, and you're still able to send text messages (and receive them) while on the phone. We're not saying you don't or won't need the functionality, just that it didn't sting too much to see it go (though admittedly, we were on WiFi quite a bit of the time). When using data on 3G, calls take precedent, but if you're in Verizon's 2G territory and using data, your call will go to voicemail. Another thing to consider is how Verizon's network handles multiple calls. You can add up to two people to a call, but after that, everyone gets shot to voicemail, unlike the AT&T phone, where the numbers go way beyond that.

A bigger issue may be that while using the Personal Hotspot feature (more on this in a minute), your calls will kill your connection. That means that if you're loading a page on your computer tethered to your phone and you get a call, the page stops loading and doesn't resume until the call stops ringing, or you hang up. It's a seamless transition, but still a bit jarring. If you're a busy person who is going to rely on this feature for connectivity and rely on the iPhone for important calls, this could be a serious issue.

Then there's the issue of international roaming. While Verizon does claim about 40 countries where you can roam with your CDMA device, there are lots of holes in that map. As a backup, the company has a service where it will provide you with a GSM device if you're planning on traveling somewhere you'll need one. We highly doubt you'll get a GSM iPhone (though that would be a nice gesture for customers), but at least you'll have some connectivity overseas.

Overall, if you're already a Verizon customer, none of this will really be shocking. If you're just coming to the network, you probably need a phone that actually makes calls. There are some issues here that can be aggravating on a very minor level, but ultimately none of them equal the frustration of continually dropping calls. The Verizon device lives up to the promise that yes, really, you're going to be able to make a phone call with your iPhone 4.

So far so good -- voice calls are better, minor issues really are minor. It's an iPhone on Verizon's network. Ah, but it's an iPhone on Verizon's network -- and that means there are certain considerations you're going to have to take into account when it comes to data.

Let's put this as simply as we can: data rates on the Verizon iPhone 4 we tested were dramatically slower than those on its AT&T counterpart. How much slower? Well, even though network speeds fluctuate based on many factors, we didn't see the Verizon device peak much beyond 1.4 Mbps on downloads (and even that high was rare), and it barely hit 0.5 Mbps on upstream. On the other hand, the AT&T device regularly pulled down above 3 Mbps, and 1 Mbps or more going up. We'll admit that the Verizon speeds were more consistent, but the irrefutable fact is that AT&T's network is much, much faster, at least in our neck of the woods.

Of course, how much that's going to affect you is based on a lot of factors, and in our day-to-day, there wasn't a noticeable sensation of the device being slower. That consistency in data rates actually may have helped in some situations -- particularly when pulling down maps. We see our AT&T device stop and start quite a bit on major data pulls, whereas the Verizon phone seemed to latch onto a stream and not stop until the bits were uniformly situated on our phone. That said, there's no denying that YouTube videos and streaming content is going to appear more quickly on your AT&T handset.

Software

Even though the Verizon iPhone is running iOS 4.2.6, there aren't many significant or noticeable changes, save for one new addition: Personal Hotspot.

The premise of Personal Hotspot is pretty simple -- it's a hotspot app that lives in your system preferences, allowing you to tether wirelessly (over WiFi or Bluetooth) or with your sync cable to the phone's 3G service.

Setup couldn't have been easier, as you simply turn on the feature, and pick a password for your network. Unfortunately, the network takes on the name of your device and doesn't allow you to assign a custom name. Connecting devices was essentially flawless -- we managed to get all sorts of gadgets online via our Verizon connection, and on the phone side, you're kept abreast of what's happening on your network with a notification that lives at the top of your screen (like when you're in a call and go back out to the homescreen).

The service itself seemed great, though shelling out another $20 for this functionality might not be worth it to everyone. Again, the speeds of Verizon's network aren't best in class, and pulling down full size images and webpages makes that painfully clear.

Battery life

Just as with the original iPhone 4 we tested, we saw phenomenal battery life with Verizon's model too. On a day of extremely heavy use (lots and lots of phone calls, browsing, email, Twitter, text messaging) we saw well over 24 hours on a single charge. There didn't seem to be any significant hit to battery life over what we witnessed in our original iPhone 4 review. Just as with the AT&T model, backgrounding apps like turn-by-turn navigation proved to be the biggest battery draws, alongside some of the streaming video applications currently available. The bottom line, however, is that new users and switchers should be pleased as punch with the number they'll get from the device.

Pricing

We mean it when we say this is an iPhone 4 on Verizon -- the available plans are exactly the same as for every other Verizon smartphone. That means you're looking at $29.99 a month for unlimited data, with an optional additional $20 a month charge for 2GB of tethering data. You'll also need a Nationwide voice plan, of course -- the cheapest with unlimited texting is the $59 plan that offers 450 minutes a month, so you're looking at a minimum of $90 a month (or $1,080 yearly) to keep your Verizon iPhone 4 happy and completely functional. (If you drop the texting it's $70 a month, or $840.)

Compared to AT&T, that's actually a good deal, since AT&T caps its data plans. AT&T offers 2GB of data for $25 a month and the same optional additional $20 surcharge for tethering, and the cheapest combination of voice and unlimited texting plans also offers 450 minutes for $59 a month, so in the end you're spending the same $90 a month or $1,080 yearly for less data, and the same $70 a month or $840 yearly if you drop the texting plan.

However, AT&T's tiered plans mean you can pay much less if you don't use much mobile data. If you're willing to live with a 200MB data budget, you can drop down to a $15 a month data plan, which puts you at $74 a month or $888 yearly, and if you further drop texting from that you're down to just $55 per month or $660 yearly. But again, you're making some big tradeoffs there.

A final note: We're told Verizon's unlimited data plans will eventually go away in favor of tiered plans, so if you're looking to get in, you'd better act fast.

Wrap-up

If you haven't caught the theme of this review, let us spell it out -- this is very much the iPhone 4 that people have come to know and love. It's not the next generation Apple device, it's not a wowee-zowee LTE experiment, and it isn't a revolution in mobile computing. What it is, however, is a big chance to give a large portion of America's smartphone users a crack at a phone they've likely been lusting after for some time. It's also an opportunity to give relief to long-suffering AT&T customers in the form of a usable, reliable phone (not to mention a good way to kill many of the jokes the current phone's calls have created). While it isn't all rainbows and flowers (the data speed issues or the voice / data considerations could be a dealbreaker for some), it does kind of feel like Apple and Verizon did the impossible: they made the best smartphone in America just a little bit better.

Samsung Continuum (Verizon Wireless)

The good: The Samsung Continuum features two displays; the smaller ticker window is a great tool for quickly accessing information and multitasking. The smartphone also has a 1GHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture. It offers full wireless options and can be used as a mobile hot spot.

The bad: The smaller screen makes for a more cramped typing experience. Ticker display currently isn't available for third-party apps. Runs Android 2.1, and Bing is set as the default search engine. You can't uninstall preloaded apps and services.

The bottom line: More than just a gimmick, the Samsung Continuum's secondary display is a useful management and multitasking tool, but its constant flow of information might not appeal to everybody.

Samsung Continuum

The Samsung Continuum is just the latest in the company's Galaxy S series of Android phones, but it stands apart from the rest with its secondary ticker display. To be honest, we initially thought the display might be more of a gimmick than a useful feature, but after some use, we found it to be a great way to stay informed on the go or on the sly, and it even proved to be a great multitasking tool. With some tweaking and fine tuning to expand its capabilities to third-party apps, we can see it being even more beneficial. That said, we realize it won't appeal to everyone, especially since there are some trade-offs, such as a smaller primary screen and some effects on the performance. And for those who want more power, we recommend going with the Motorola Droid X or the Samsung Fascinate. However, if you're after a smartphone with that always-on connection, the Continuum offers that with a handy and unique spin. The Samsung Continuum is available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

Design
The Samsung Continuum is a slimmer, more compact device than the rest of the Galaxy S family. It measures 4.9 inches tall by 2.3 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick, weighs 4.4 ounces, and has rounded edges for a nice fit in the hand and pants pocket. It has an all-black, lacquered finish, which is very sleek-looking but makes the plastic battery door a little slick and prone to smudges and fingerprints. A soft-touch finish or some metal parts would certainly go a long way in giving the phone a more premium feel, but, minor quibbles aside, the Continuum is quite a solid device.

More than size, what separates the Continuum from the pack is the fact that it has dual displays: a larger 3.4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen on top and a smaller 1.8-inch Super AMOLED ticker display on the bottom (more on this a bit later). As we've seen on the other Galaxy S phones, the Super AMOLED delivers an excellent viewing experience, with sharp quality, vibrant colors, and good outdoor visibility.

The Continuum features Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 user interface, which you can read more about in our review of the Samsung Vibrant. It won't appeal to everyone, especially Android purists, but we think it makes the operating system easier to use for consumers and first-time buyers. The touch screen is quite responsive; it registered all our touches and we were able to scroll through the various screens and menus with ease. Pinch-to-zoom also worked like a charm. The Continuum offers a Swype keyboard, but since the handset has a smaller screen than some of its Galaxy S siblings, it was a little more difficult to use. You can switch back to the standard Android keyboard if you don't care for Swype, though we found it even more frustrating to use since pecking at the cramped keys led to numerous mistaken presses.

Separating the two screens is a small strip featuring the standard Android shortcuts: menu, home, back, and search. On the left side of the phone, you get a volume rocker and Micro-USB port; there's a microSD expansion slot and dedicated camera key on the right. The top of the device houses the 3.5mm headphone jack and power button, and the camera and flash can be found on the back.

Verizon packages the Samsung Continuum with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a preinstalled 8GB microSD card, and reference material.

Ticker display
So what's the ticker display all about? Well, it's a small, customizable window that streams real-time information from your social networks and your news, sports, entertainment, and weather feeds and acts as a notification area, with the idea being that you can simply look at the ticker display for quick updates rather than having to wake up your phone from its standby state. To help in this, the Continuum features grip sensor technology that will automatically activate the ticker screen when you touch the bottom sides of the phone with your hand. From there, you can swipe from left to right and vice versa to see your various updates.

Admittedly, we had our doubts about the feature. It could have easily fallen into the gimmicky category. But after a few days with the phone, we found that it can be quite useful when tailored to your personal needs. When first activated, the ticker shows basic information, such as time, date, and weather. (For the weather, you can choose your city when first setting up the phone, and pressing the little icon will also launch the WeatherBug app on the Continuum's larger screen to give you an extended forecast.) A swipe to the right will show you any missed calls, new messages, e-mail, voice mail, and instant messages; by tapping on the icons, you can launch the individual app on the larger screen, where you can view more information or respond to the notifications. Another swipe to the right will display updates from your RSS and social networking feeds. On all of the ticker screens there is a small list icon on the right, which you can tap to view your feeds in one full view or by category.

As we found out early on, the ticker display can be a bit overwhelming and quite distracting if not managed properly. For example, the Twitter integration pulls in all updates, not just mentions or direct messages, so if you follow a lot of people, it gets to be a bit too much. The same is true if you subscribe to a lot of RSS feeds. To manage your subscriptions, you can press the menu key when in your feeds view or you can go to Settings > Ticker Settings. This will bring up a tabbed view of all your current subscriptions, which you can add to or remove, and you can adjust your display options and alerts, and even set the ticker display to go into sleep mode.

We ended up paring our subscriptions down to a couple of news services and turned off Twitter completely, which made it much more helpful. It was nice to get snippets of information and the latest news throughout the day without having to fully turn on the phone, and since the window gives you a small preview of the subject of an e-mail, it made it easier for us to manage our inbox while on the go, responding only to the most important messages. As a result, we found it much more powerful than Android's notification system. The ticker is also helpful in that you can use it while working with other apps on the larger display.

For example, the ticker can be used to control your music player while you're, say, browsing the Web, which is nice. Also, if you happen to be watching a video and a call comes in, the video will automatically pause and, from the ticker, you can choose to accept, reject, or ignore the call with a text message. In some ways, we found this to be the most valuable aspect of the ticker, as it allowed for easier multitasking. Hopefully, third-party apps will be able to make use of the ticker in the future, but for now, it seems to be limited to the features described above. (For example, we couldn't control Pandora via the ticker.)

Though the ticker display won't be for everybody, we do think it serves a useful purpose rather than being just a novelty item.

HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon Wireless)

The good: The HTC Thunderbolt offers incredibly fast 4G data speeds. The Android 2.2 smartphone also supports simultaneous voice and data over 3G and boasts a large 4.3-inch touch screen, ample storage, and an excellent camera.

The bad: Battery life takes a big hit when using 4G. There is no way to toggle between 3G and 4G.

The bottom line: The HTC Thunderbolt lights up with blazingly fast data speeds, but those who want 4G now should be aware that it takes a big toll on the smartphone's battery life.

Introduced at CES 2011, the HTC Thunderbolt is Verizon's first 4G LTE, and it's finally available for $249.99 with a two-year contract. The Android 2.2 smartphone might not offer the latest and greatest (e.g., dual-core processor), but with the carrier promising average download speeds of 5Mbps to 12Mbps and upload speeds of 2Mbps to 5Mbps, it's no surprise why many are clamoring to get their hands on this device. This includes us, which is why were so excited to take the HTC Thunderbolt out for a test-drive. The lightning-fast smartphone delivers on many fronts, but it also comes at a cost.

Design
The HTC Thunderbolt is cut from the same cloth as the HTC Evo 4G and the HTC Desire HD, so if you've ever handled those devices, then you have a fairly good idea of what to expect from the Thunderbolt.

At 4.75 inches tall by 2.44 inches wide by 0.56 inch thick and 6.23 ounces, the Thunderbolt isn't for those who prefer dainty devices. The smartphone is large and actually slightly thicker and heavier than the Evo, but it's manageable and the tapered back and soft-touch finish make it comfortable to hold in the hand. As we've come to expect from HTC, the phone is solidly built and has a nice, premium feel to it.


The HTC Thunderbolt has a similar design to the Evo 4G.

On front, you've got the same 4.3-inch WVGA (800x480 pixels) touch screen as the Evo. There are higher-resolution displays out there, like those on the Motorola Atrix 4G or iPhone 4, but the Thunderbolt's screen still holds up, with clear and bright picture quality. Text was easy to read, and Web pages and video looked lovely on the large screen.

The touch screen is also responsive. Apps launched as we tapped them, and we were able to smoothly navigate through the home screens and menus. The display also features a proximity sensor and built-in accelerometer, which was quick to change screen orientation when we rotated the phone.

The front-facing camera sits right above the screen on the right; below the display are the home, menu, back, and search navigation buttons. Meanwhile, the 8-megapixel camera and flash are located on back, but we really wish there was a dedicated camera button on the phone. Instead, you'll have to use the touch screen to snap photos.

On the bright side, the Thunderbolt has a sturdy kickstand so you can prop the phone on a desk to watch videos, conduct speakerphone calls, and the like. There's a Micro-USB port on the left side, and a volume rocker occupies the right side. Finally, on top of the device, you'll find a power/lock button and 3.5mm headphone jack.

4G features and performance
Before we get to the phone's more-basic features, we thought we'd address the HTC Thunderbolt's whole raison d'etre, and that's 4G support. As mentioned earlier, the Thunderbolt is the first smartphone to work on Verizon's LTE 4G network, which promises average download speeds of 5Mbps to 12Mbps and upload speeds of 2Mbps to 5Mbps.

Given the impressive results we got using Verizon's LG VL600 LTE USB modem, you'd think we'd be a little more prepared for what we experienced on the Thunderbolt, but we were still blown away by what we saw. It's fast. Real fast.

Running Ookla's Speedtest.net app on the handset yielded some erratic and suspicious results (upload speeds were registering up to 39.79Mbps), so we also measured speeds using the phone as a mobile hot spot and as a tethered modem. With the Thunderbolt connected to our MacBook Pro as a mobile hot spot here in New York, we were able to get average download speeds of 7.41Mbps and upload speeds of 6.56Mbps.

By comparison, the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint averaged 3.42Mbps down and 0.93Mpbs up; the Samsung Galaxy S 4G on T-Mobile averaged 4.17Mbps down and 1.68Mbps up; and the HTC Inspire 4G on AT&T averaged 1.75Mbps down and 0.31Mbps up.

We got even better results when we had the Thunderbolt tethered to our Lenovo T61 ThinkPad. We averaged download speeds of 15.58Mbps and upload speeds of 3.44Mbps. (See example speed test below.)

All these numbers translate into great real-world usage. Over a mobile hot-spot connection, we were able to download a 5.1MB MP3 file in 20 seconds and upload a 16.4MB photo album in just 47 seconds. On the Thunderbolt itself, the mobile sites for CNN and ESPN loaded in 3.6 seconds and 4 seconds, respectively, and CNET's full site came up in 12 seconds--one of the fastest times we've seen from a smartphone. Apps downloaded and installed almost instantaneously, and YouTube videos loaded within a couple of seconds and played back without interruption. We were also able to easily stream media from such services as TuneWiki and Bitbop.

Currently, Verizon's 4G network covers 39 markets and more than 60 major airports, and the carrier says it plans to blanket the county with LTE service over the next year and continue to roll out coverage over the next three years, with the hopes of 285 million customers by the end 2013.

The Thunderbolt does a good job of seamlessly switching between 3G and 4G. That said, we do wish that there was a way to toggle between 3G and 4G like the Evo, because as we discuss later, using 4G comes at the cost of battery life.

Currently, Verizon's 4G LTE unlimited data plan costs $29.99 per month. The carrier is also making the mobile hot-spot feature free until May 15. Pricing for the 4G mobile hot-spot service has not been announced by Verizon, unlike previously reported.

Features
The rest of the HTC Thunderbolt's features are pretty much on par with today's higher-end smartphones. As a phone, it offers a speakerphone, conference calling, voice dialing, and text and multimedia messaging. Stereo Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS are also all onboard. One unique thing about the Thunderbolt compared with Verizon's other smartphones is that it can do simultaneous voice and data over 4G and 3G, thanks to a special chipset in the handset.

The HTC Thunderbolt runs Android 2.2 with the latest version of HTC Sense, which brings such enhancements as new camera tools and a faster boot time (though you have to enable this through the Settings menu on the Thunderbolt). You can read more about the new HTC Sense in our review of the HTC Inspire 4G.

In addition to the standard Google services and support for Microsoft Exchange, POP3 and IMAP accounts, and social network integration, the Thunderbolt comes preloaded with a number of extra apps from HTC and Verizon, including HTC's Peep Twitter client, Footprints, the Bitbop video streaming service, Rock Band, Let's Golf, and TuneWiki, which lets you listen to Internet radio and view music videos with accompanying lyrics, among other things. Some, like TuneWiki, we found useful, but others we could do without and unfortunately, you can't uninstall them.

Also, though the device has a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls, there is no preinstalled video chat client, and even worse, there is no indication as to which services are compatible with the device. We downloaded Skype Mobile and Qik, only to find out that both apps aren't currently supported on the smartphone, even though the Thunderbolt's owner's manual has a section on how to use Skype. Tango and Fring appear to be the only clients that work with the Thunderbolt for now.

One piece of good news is that the Thunderbolt offers 8GB of internal memory along with a preinstalled 32GB memory card. Though you don't get the full 40GB of storage, you should still have plenty of room for storing apps, music, videos, and photos.

Speaking of which, the Thunderbolt's 8-megapixel camera does a pretty good job of producing nice-looking images and 720p HD video. The camera offers various editing options, including white-balance controls, exposure settings, ISO, and built-in effects. Even in low-light situations, picture quality was clear and colors were fairly bright. Outdoor shots were vibrant and sharp, and the camcorder also captured clear and nice-looking HD video.

The HTC Thunderbolt offers the usual channels for sharing your photos and videos. The smartphone has DLNA support, so you can wirelessly stream media from your phone to a compatible device, but unlike the Evo 4G, there is no HDMI port.

Performance
We tested the dual-band HTC Thunderbolt in New York using Verizon Wireless service, and call quality was mostly good. On our end, we could understand our callers with no problem, but occasionally there was some hissing in the background and voices could be a bit garbled. Friends had positive things to say about the sound quality and had no major complaints.

Speakerphone quality was OK. Everything was crystal clear on our end, and there was enough volume to continue conversation in a noisier environment. However, we got mixed feedback from our friends; one said it was tinny but he could still understand everything we were saying, whereas another caller said that it was extra echo-y. We successfully paired the Thunderbolt with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones and were able to make calls and listen to music through the headsets.

The Thunderbolt is powered by a next-gen 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon processor and has 768MB RAM. Though some might wait for the dual-core Motorola Droid Bionic, we found the general performance on the Thunderbolt to be just fine. There was minimal lag, and the smartphone never froze or crashed during our review period. We did, however, encounter some software bugs with HTC Sense and Bitbop.

The HTC Thunderbolt ships with a 1,400mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 6.3 hours and up to 13 days of standby time. For reasons unbeknown to us, the smartphone actually has a smaller battery than the one (1,500mAh) found on the Evo. In our battery drain tests, the Thunderbolt delivered 5 hours of continuous talk time over 4G. In day-to-day usage, the battery life left much to be desired. With moderate usage (some Web browsing, e-mail, phone calls), the Thunderbolt went from a full charge in the morning to about 15 percent in the mid- to late afternoon. However, with heavier 4G usage, we were scrambling for an outlet after 3 to 4 hours, which is pretty bad, to say the least. We'll continue to do more extensive testing over the next few days, but if you plan on purchasing the Thunderbolt, we recommend getting an extra battery.

According to FCC radiation tests, the Thunderbolt has a digital SAR rating of 1.2W/kg and a Hearing Aid Compatibility Rating of M4/T3.

Conclusion
The HTC Thunderbolt is Verizon's fastest and most powerful smartphone yet. The 4G speeds do not disappoint, blowing right past the competition and taking the browsing and streaming experience on a smartphone to the next level. It also serves as a fine hot spot/modem. Couple that with HTC's premium design and a solid feature set and the Thunderbolt looks like a pretty attractive option. However, all of this comes at the expense of battery life, and with more LTE smartphones coming to Verizon in the coming months, including the dual-core Motorola Droid Bionic, it complicates the buying decision. If you have the luxury or the patience to wait, it might be worth sticking around to see how the Droid Bionic and others perform, but for early adopters who crave the speed now, the HTC Thunderbolt can certainly deliver. Just be sure to pick up a spare or extended battery.

Verizon Apple iPhone 4 review roundup

The initial round of Verizon Wireless Apple iPhone 4 reviews are in, and in general they are pretty much what we expected: it's an iPhone 4, the voice calls are better, the data speeds are often slower, otherwise everything is pretty the same.

Engadget suggests that Verizon and Apple "did the impossible: they made the best smartphone in America just a little bit better," in spite of the lack of simultaneous voice and data.

USA Today noted that "If you are using a navigation application when you receive a call, the navigation pauses while you take the call and resumes when you hang up. And when on a call, you can send, receive and read text messages. You can use the iPhone for other purposes while a call is in progress, such as going through your contacts list to pull a phone number."

Wired summed up the new voice call quality by quoting a friend of the author: "Holy crap, you sound so much better. That's amazing. I can actually hear you."

AllThingsD's Walt Mossberg agrees on the improved voice quality, but says "if you really care about data speed, or travel overseas, and AT&T service is tolerable in your area, you may want to stick with AT&T."

Slashgear notes that while the hardware is externally almost exactly the same, "the slightly repositioned ringer mute switch on the Verizon version may mean that tight fitting cases such as 'bumpers' no longer fit. Apple's official bumper has been updated to suit both variants, but if you plan on using your existing cases then you might find things don't quite line up."

PCMag talks a bit about the slightly altered antenna design, noting that it seems to work well: "I also gave the Verizon iPhone a similar [death] grip and never saw the bars drop down." It was also noted, though, that bars are a weak indication of antenna performance. In any case, the phone's mobile hotspot feature was a hit.

LaptopMag sums it up quite well: "The iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless delivers the reliable data and voice coverage AT&T has failed to provide, making this device a dependable partner for work and play."

Pantech UML290 4G LTE modem for Verizon review

The Pantech UML209 is the second LTE(INFO) modem to be offered by Verizon Wireless for use on its new high-speed 4G network. The UML290 connects to a Windows or OS X computer via a USB port, and it features a unique design that offers some flexibility in terms of antenna position and also keeps the USB connector out of harm's way when the modem is not being used.

The UML290 weighs 51g (1.8oz) and measures 88mm x 38mm x 16.5mm (3.5in x 1.5in x .6in) in its most compact form. That's larger than many purely 3G modems on the market, but not bad for an early 4G/3G dual-mode modem. To use the device, one simply rotates the dark gray antenna to reveal the USB plug. The USB plug can be opened 90 or 180 degrees for optimal use, and Verizon includes a USB extension cable when more flexibility is required. A microSD card slot is found on the bottom of the device, but the UML290 ships with no cards pre-installed.

I tested the UML290 in the northern Philadelphia suburbs as well as in New York City and the areas of New Jersey that lie between them. The results were overwhelmingly positive, but there were a couple of snags and the speeds achieved did not match those 20Mbps figures reported by some other publications.

In the Philadelphia area, the Pantech UML290 was able to post 9 to 11Mbps download speeds with ease, but upload speeds rarely bested 1.25Mbps. Network latency was generally in the 150 to 160ms range according to SpeedTest.net. New York City and northern New Jersey speeds were generally slower. In the city proper I was able to get 9Mbps down and 1.5Mbps upload, but network latency was generally around 200ms. Further south in the New Jersey suburbs of New Your data speeds were generally around 7.5 to 8Mbps down and anywhere from .5 to 1.2Mbps up. Network latency was still in the 200ms area.

The previously mentioned snags had to do with some dropped connections when in the Philadelphia area. The only pattern I could detect is that they seemed to happen when on the fringe of 4G coverage, having to do, possibly, with switching back and forth between Verizon's 4G and 3G networks. A couple of times I had to manually reconnect the modem after having lost connectivity.

I would have appreciated it if the drivers for Windows were included on the modem itself, as is common, but that is not the case. Instead, users must install from an included CD to load drivers and the Verizon access software. This is a problem if your laptop, like mine, has no CD drive. No Mac drivers were included with the UML290, but Verizon released drivers for OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 today.

Apart from that one problem and the CD based drivers, though, the Pantech is fantastic. The speeds it hits are beyond anything I've gotten from Sprint/Clear's WiMAX(INFO) network, and the coverage is worlds better. Sprint 4G has proven itself to be mostly useless for me when taking the train through New Jersey to New York, but Verizon's LTE network was very strong and consistent.

After all, what good is 4G capability if you can't get on a 4G network with enough bandwidth to let you actually download and upload large files? Not much.

In that regard, Pantech's UML290 modem and Verizon's LTE network have given me my first truly enjoyable 4G experience, working quickly most everywhere I tried it. I highly recommend both the network and the Pantech UML290.

The Pantech UML290 is available for $99.99, after mail-in rebate, with a 2 year contract, and is available for $249.99 without a contract. A 5GB data plan costs $50 per month, while a 10GB plan costs $80 per month.

Motorola Xoom update rolling out tonight, Flash Player 10.2 coming soon

Starting tonight, Verizon will begin rolling out a software update for their Motorola Xoom tablet which will prepare the device to receive Flash Player 10.2. Back in February Adobe said Flash Player would be available for Honeycomb tablets within a few weeks after the Xoom launch, so it looks like they will meet their goal.

If you unlocked your Xoom, it will need to be restored. According to the Motorola support forums, you can receive the update over 3G or WiFi if your device has not been modified.

Google and their partners have pushed Flash Player as a big advantage of Honeycomb tablets over the iPad 2, so they had to be disappointed that it was not ready for the Xoom launch. Honeycomb has been in development for a long time and everyone knew this big launch was coming, so my guess is the blame lies with Adobe.

When it comes the availability of Flash Player 10.2, Motorola says to “stay tuned as we’ll have more info regarding availability very soon.”

A closer look at Verizon’s upcoming onslaught of Android phones

Over the next six months Verizon will unleash one of the most impressive lineup of Android devices we have ever seen. There will be smartphones of all shapes and sizes including several lightning-fast 4G LTE models, a couple of dual-core beasts, devices made for play or work, and several sequels to some of our favorites. Check out the details of eight upcoming Verizon Android phones after the jump.

1. HTC Thunderbolt

Everyone knows about the HTC Thunderbolt by now, which should be Verizon’s first 4G LTE phone. The device has been in testing for awhile as Verizon works out some issues, but it should be launching “by the end of Q2″. Rumored pricing places the Thunderbolt around $249-299 on contract. We are still waiting to learn how Verizon’s tiered 4G data will work on smartphones, but see the Xoom’s data plans for a preview of the pricing.

2. LG Revolution

The LG Revolution was another 4G LTE phone unveiled at CES that is slated for a Q2 release. This device is similar to the Thunderbolt in terms of CPU and display, but it has a few notable features like Qi wireless charging and support for voice over LTE (VoLTe). The Revolution recently passed through the FCC and is currently in testing, so there is a small chance it could beat the Thunderbolt to stores (unless HTC has some exclusive deal).

3. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

The Xperia Play (aka PlayStation phone) was leaked a really long time ago and Sony Ericsson finally announced it at Mobile World Congress. This will be the first device to be PlayStation Certified and have access to the PlayStation Store. Gameloft will release their 10 best selling games for the Xperia Play’s launch and produce 10 more titles within six months. We don’t know when it will hit stores, but it should arrive by summer.

4. Samsung Stealth

Back at CES Verizon was calling this phone the “Samsung 4G LTE phone”, but it now sounds like they have decided on the name Stealth. This device is similar to the Galaxy S series since it has the same Humingbird CPU, but there are new additions like the Super AMOLED display and support for LTE. Current rumors suggest the Samsung Stealth will fly into Verizon stores by mid-April.

Highlights of the Samsung Stealth include:

5. Casio G’zOne Commando

We have never mentioned Casio’s G’zOne Commando smartphone, but it was on display back at CES. The Commando is a rugged phone that is water resistant and designed for outdoor activities. Casio packed eight useful tools into this phone including an earth compass, walking counter, adventure training, thermometer, tides, sun/moon, and star gazer. Specs are unknown at this point, but it is rumored to have an 800 MHz processor.

6. HTC Droid Incredible 2

HTC Incredible SNo real surprises here. HTC’s Droid Incredible was one of the best selling Android phones on Verizon and now they are launching a sequel. The Droid Incredible 2 will be nearly identical to the recently announced Incredible S. The design has been tweaked, processor and memory have been upgraded, and a front-facing camera was added. We have already seen the device pop up in Verizon’s inventory system and it’s currently being tested, so look for a release in the coming months.

Highlights of the Incredible 2 include:

7. Motorola Droid Bionic

The Droid Bionic was announced at CES and is Verizon’s first 4G smartphone with a dual-core CPU. It is similar to the Motorola Atrix 4G, but it gains a larger display while losing 512 MB RAM and the fingerprint scanner. If I was a Verizon customer, this phone would be at the top of my list. The scheduled release date is Q2.

Highlights of the Droid Bionic include:

8. Motorola Droid X2

Rounding out the group we have the Motorola Droid X2. We know from leaked pictures of the Droid X2 that it will look almost identical to the original, much the same way the Droid 2 resembled the Droid 1. However on the inside, Motorola has upgraded the specs to include a dual-core Tegra 2 chip. Overall the specs are pretty similar to the Droid Bionic, but the Droid X2 will only operate on Verizon’s 3G network and not support LTE. Expect a summer launch.

Rumored specs for the Droid X2 include:

  • 1 GHz Tegra 2 dual-core CPU
  • 4.3 inch qHD (540 x 960) display
  • 8 megapixels camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, front-facing camera
  • 16 GB internal storage, 512 MB RAM

Which one will you buy?

If you are looking for a new Android phone, it’s a good time to be a Verizon customer. Every one of these devices looks to be a quality product (Casio I’m not sure of yet) and Verizon has something that appeals to everyone but the fans of physical QWERTY keyboards.

These are all the phones we know about right now, but Verizon is likely to toss in a couple mid-range models from HTC and Motorola. I expect they will also launch the Samsung Galaxy S II and Motorola Droid 3, so Verizon could offer well over a dozen Android devices in the next six months.
