ZiiLABS introduces two new CPUs for Android tablets - the ZMS-20/40

It seems that a competitor to the Tegra 2 and Exynos chips has just entered the tablet competition. Meet the dual-core ZMS-20 and quad-core ZMS-40 from ZiiLABS. The ZMS-20 is clocked at 1.5GHz and offers 1080p video playback, OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics with 3D support and DDR3 compatibility.

There's not much word on the quad-core ZMS-40, though. Its architecture however is supposed to scale up to 6GHz and should support up to 100 cores. Wait what? Those are some mind-blowing numbers.

The ZMS-20 is based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture. It's HDMI 1.4-ready and supports OpenCL. It will be released with a dedicated Android tablet platform and SDK.

Both chipsets are optimized for Android Honeycomb use, so their main target are, naturally, droid tablets.

The dual-core ZMS-20 chipset is sampling as we speak and should become available this summer, while the more intriguing quad-core ZMS-40 still has some way to go. We hope to hear more news soon and will keep you posted.

Motorola XOOM tablet update arriving soon

A software update for the Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet on Verizon Wireless that will address some bugs and add new features is expected to arrive soon. A change log for the update has been found on Verizon's website.

The change log reveals that the XOOM will get added security features and bug fixes in the web browser, Bluetooth support when using Google Talk, Bluetooth mouse support, and other bug fixes throughout the system.

It is unknown as to when the XOOM will get the update, but we expect it to arrive sooner rather than later. Hopefully the browser will decide to crash a little less often with the new update.

Nvidia Tegra 2 Android Tablet

At present development of Mobile processors sector is at boom. Nvidia has always been recognized distinctly for doing something ahead of time. Nvidia stands on this reputation. They unveiled Tegra 2 the latest of their Mobile processors, during CES 2010. According to me this time Nvidia rocked the mobile market.

Hardware of Tegra 2

The previous Tegra processor was a system-on-chip for handheld devices. The Tegra 2 is a heterogeneous design. It incorporates a Cortex-A9 CPU from ARM. Tegra 2 is the first dual core A9 processor clocked at 500 MHz plus a low-power GPU. Tegra 2 is 40nm where as 65nm used in earlier. I was speechless on learning that this processor can outdo the Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor.

Performance of Tegra 2

Unreal 3 engine was easily run on Tegra 2 processor. It is capable of good quality 3D rendering, playing 1080p HD video for 10 hour on battery and 140 hours of music if the display is off. The latest 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU cannot play 1080p HD video. Tegra 2 amazes me by this capability.

Upcoming devices with Tegra 2

ICD Ultra Android Tablet

It has 7-inch touchscreen with integrated 3G connection, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1. This device is equipt with mini-HDMI slot so that you can port your video to HD panel. The OS of ICD Ultra is Android 2.1. Some important additional features that I saw are accelerometer, embedded light sensor and 1.3 MP camera. It is rumored that by the mid 2010, 4G networks are to be launched in America. ICD is trying to incorporate this device with 4G compatibility.

This tablet is be sold at 249$.It will be commercial released by the mid of 2010.

Quanta Tegra 2 tablet

This is a prototype shown in CSE 2010.Quanta running on Android 2.1 OS. This device has HDMI port for output to a HD display panel. The design also incorporates 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. The release date is not declared yet.
