And so we’re finally here, at the culmination of the biggest cricketing fiesta of the year – the 14 contestants have been whittled down to just two surviving combatants and now it all comes down to one massive game which will decide who will be the IPL season 4 champions.
Defending champions and red-hot favorites the Chennai Super Kings will go into the match feeling supremely confident and with the huge psychological boost that home advantage offers, yet the formidable Royal Challengers Bangalore will be ready to give it everything they’ve got – having come this far, they are not going to back down without a fight.
Chennai, who have won all seven league games at their Chidambaram Stadium this year, will be further bolstered by reports that the low and slow conditions of the pitch suit their style of play perfectly.
Yet Bangalore didn’t get this far by being pushovers, and they will be far from daunted by today’s task – with one of the best captains and some of the biggest hitters in the league to call upon, we can look forward to a final that promises action, entertainment and drama all the way, and very possibly the chance of a big upset.

Team News
After they only just scraped into second place in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings underlined their supremacy by staking their place in the final at the first attempt with a nailbiting comeback chase to beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Struggling at 7/2 the magnificent Suresh Raina smashed a superb 73 not out as the Super Kings roared back into the game to win with just two balls left.
That performance was just the kind of thing we have come to expect from Chennai, who simply never give up and have immense belief in their ability to take on and beat anyone.
The defending champions are consistently among the top performing teams in the IPL, as evidenced by the fact they have qualified for the play-offs three times in four seasons. One of the key factors to their success has been their ability to retain the core players in their team, while others constantly succumb to the temptation to chop and change with little or no effect. The regular presence of star players like Dhoni, Raina, Hussey and Morkel has seen Chennai reap rich rewards in the form of a stability and togetherness that no other side can match.
The Super Kings stars not only reward the clubs loyalty with fantastic performances week in, week out, but they have also proven to be excellent mentors for upcoming stars like Murali Vijay and Subramaniam Badrinath.
One thing that sets Chennai apart from the rest is undoubtedly what’s been labeled the “Dhoni factor”. A born leader, Dhoni is the epitome of composure he leads by example, he is fantastic at motivating his troops and he is a master of tactics. Not for nothing do you get to captain a world cup-winning India team and lead Chennai to the IPL and Champions League double. Dhoni’s record as skipper is simply superb, something other sides are deeply envious of.
However, as important as Dhoni is to the side, Chennai are blessed with a wealth of match-winning talents. If Hussey has a bad game, Raina comes up with a sublime performance, and if Raina falls, Dhoni comes in. And even if all the batsmen falter, the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Albie Morkel can be relied upon to carry the team to success again and again.
Chennai possess a belief in themselves that is quite unmatched by anyone else, and this, together with their stability, their loyalty to each other and their never-say-die attitude makes them a phenomenon to behold. It’s little wonder they are unbeaten at home this season, and quite rightly tipped as red-hot favorites to carry of the IPL title yet again.
But for all the accolades you can throw Chennai’s way, there is no denying that Royal Challengers Bangalore make for a highly formidable opponent who will make the Super Kings fight tooth and nail in today’s IPL final.
As Gayle has proved again and again this season, once he gets going there is simply no stopping Bangalore – as we saw just last night when his tremendous 89 led the team to victory over Mumbai. Bangalore’s bowlers also responded brilliantly, skipper Vettori leading the charge with 3 wickets as they stopped Mumbai in their tracks.
Bangalore’s fielders were superb as well, producing a performance littered with acrobatic stops and audacious catches that stopped the Mumbai machine dead in its tracks.
Without a doubt though, everything revolves around the outstanding Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Even though Virat Kohli has put in some outstanding innings for the Challengers this year, it is Gayle who has been the team’s engine, bulldozing everything that opponents can throw at him. Even his bowling has proved to be a tremendous asset, picking up several key wickets, stemming the run rates of the opposition and thrilling us all with his celebration jigs out on the pitch.
However, it would be unfair to label Bangalore as a one man show – they’re not. Virat Kohli is the perfect opening foil for Gayle, and more than capable of inflicting serious damage against opponents. Meanwhile, Sreenath Aravind and Zaheer Khan are one of the most potent front pairs in the league, and their efforts are backed up by the highly effective if unspectacular performances of captain Vettori.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will no doubt have a simple enough game plan. They need Gayle to have a big innings once again, and they need Aravind and Khan to get some early wickets – if both of these can be done, they will shake the hosts and may just be able to make things difficult for them. It will take a supreme effort to stem Chennai’s run flow, something that will take equally brilliant bowling and fielding if they are to pull it off.
It’s going to be a tough match for Bangalore however you look at it – but if anyone has a chance to pull off a miracle, it’s Gayle and his cohorts.
