Dodgeball and owen wilson

Journal staff photographer Ryan Jackson has won two multimedia awards in the News Photographers Association of Canada annual pictures of the year contest for 2010.

Jackson won first place in the team multimedia category with Journal writer Ben Gelinas for a documentary about brain-injured standup comedian Sue Wirtanen.

Jackson also placed third in the single multimedia category for his video of the 2010 world-record dodgeball game at the University of Alberta that went viral on YouTube with more than 700,000 views.

"I'm really fortunate to work for a paper that gives the proper time and resources to do documentary photojournalism like this," Jackson said from the awards gala in Winnipeg Saturday night.

His work can be een at edmononjournal.com/ ideos.

Jackson's video of this year's dodgeball game used multiple cameras to simultaneously shoot a 360-degree video, allowing users to pan left, right, up and down as the video plays.

He took a similar approach in Slave Lake last week, capturing 360degree, panoramic video of a drive through neighbourhoods that were devastated by the recent wildfire. Find it at edmontonjournal.com/ wildfires.
