GetJar gets friendly with Facebook

Independent app store GetJar is looking to boost popularity by integrating with the most ubiquitous social network in the world, Facebook. By using Facebook Connect, the company hopes to differentiate itself in a world of big-brand app stores such as Apple's App Store, Amazon's Appstore, and Google's Android Market.

"I don't see the primary app stores really doing this for a while because they all see Facebook as a competitor," said Mario Tapio, director of mobile products at GetJar. Anyone who opts in to using Facebook Connect with GetJar will be able to view their friends' downloads and post their own activity and opinions to Facebook. Tapia believes that the sheer volume of applications available will make word-of-mouth an important factor in how people decide which apps to download. He even remarked that social networks "will be overshadowing search when it comes to discovery of content."

In app land, competition is nothing short of steep, with the big guns duking it out on top, and the little guys coming up with increasingly innovative ways to solve the app discovery problem. In preparation for just such a battle, GetJar raised an extra $25 million in funding earlier this year.
