Nokia N8: Highly Anticipated Smartphone, Hands on Detail Review

Nokia N8, highly anticipated smartphone (atleast for Nokia Fans) launched in India on 13th October and we got hands on it recently. First Nokia Smartphone running on Symbian^3 powered by ARM 11 680 MHz processor. This was a major release by Finnish maker to cope up with the competition in smartphone market so, Did this live upto expectations?

USP of Nokia N8 Unique Selling Point

The first thing you will notice when talking about Nokia N8 is it’s Camera. And yes, the captured picture quality of Nokia N8 is a thing to look for being very sharp and clear. Integrated Xenon Flash compliments the Carl Zeiss optics Camera allowing to capture HQ pictures even in dark which is as good as or better than Standard Digicam (we compared with Canon SD950IS)

Another innovative feature firstly introduced in any smartphone is USB On The Go aka OTG. This feature allows you to connect USB Pendrive directly to your Phone, browse and transfer files between Mobile phone and USB Drive or Portable HDD without need of a Computer.

The 3.5 inch AMOLED Capacitive Touchscreen offers a clean and clear brighter view and extremely responsive Touch as compared with Nokia predecessor. Another thing to take note of is the thumbnail preview of open applications on pressing Home key which offers a better Multitasking experience. By offering Multiple Widgetized Homescreen, Nokia has strived hard to offer an interface like Android and iOS phones.

What brings down Nokia N8

Today, Smartphone market is dominated by the Operating system Nokia N8 runs on Symbian which is a major turn-off. Atleast, Nokia Loyalists had great expectations from the new OS but I say that Symbian^3 even lacks an intuitive interface and polishing when compared to Android or Apple iOS. I agree that there have been many changes evolved in making this new OS and may be better than it’s predecessor but when compared with general Smartphone market, it is nowhere in the race.

The text and icon looks outdated. Each screen can be customized with widgets such as an e-mail preview or shortcuts for apps, but the process involves several more steps than Android does. Simply, the interface is not at all sophisticated and bit sluggish. Full virtual keyboard is only available horizontally.

If you are big on surfing and social networking, you might reconsider a decision to bring home the N8. This is because Nokia N8′s UI with its traditional approach falls short in satisfying modern internet needs.

Coming to Applications, Nokia Ovi store has around 5,000 apps working with the N8 out of which only few quality apps compatible, whereas the iOS App Store is host to more than a quarter-million apps, and the Android Market to almost 100,000.

But lets get a Symbian Loyalist’s perspective:

If you are a kind of person who can make use of all available features then go for N8, it is packed with lot of features. If you just fancy the eye catching graphical transitions, and don’t care about the stuff and need an eye catching phone to show off (no offence, what I mean is that it has some features but most of them are concentrated on attracting the user to its display and graphical transitions, I feel you cannot make much of it if you like to stretch her legs) then the Galaxy and iphone is the one. Yes I agree with the social networking integration is good but nothing that N8 can’t achieve.

Finally, I would recommend the N8, its a multimedia device, boosting with all the features you would need, 12MP camera with Carl ziess optics and xenon flash, HDMI port, USB On the GO, FM transmitter, Ovi maps with free lifetime navigation, 16GB + expendable to 48GB, uni body anodised aluminium case (meaning stays new for a long long time) lots of other features too and not to forget the price tag, its the best for the price range. you won’t regret it if you buy one. comes in five vibrant colors. But all this is from a Symbian user perspective so others may disagree and I do respect them.

So the Verdict of a Symbian Fan (@ErJugaad):
See the choice of a phone depends on the two things your past phones and your needs from the next phone meaning the priorities in your life which only you can set and which differ from others. So do your home work and get the most form what you have is the mantra from me to buy a phone or anything for that matters.

Should you buy Nokia N8?

Everyone has their own conception behind buying a gadget. If you only want your phone to take quality pictures and photos then it’s for you. I guess, it’s a job of Digital camera and for which you are employing a gadget worth Rs 25,000 is not good deal. The slow UI along with not-so-impressive surfing capabilities and lack of any special ‘social networking help’ makes it a bit less attractive so, make your right choice as per your needs.

The price is however on upper hand which is same as HTC Legend or you can you can go for others like HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S or Motorola Milestone which is somewhat close to it’s price.
