Hands-on with HP's Pre 3 webOS smartphone

HP's new Pre 3 smartphone takes what Palm started with the original Pre and runs with it, which is why we were eager to sit down witht he device while in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. With upgraded specs that include a much larger touchscreen display and a fast 1.4GHz processor, the Pre 3 certainly looks good on paper. Lucky for HP (and us), those upgrades and new build materials added up to a really good look and feel when we had the chance to check it out in person.

My first impression of the Pre 3 when I picked it up is that it is solidly constructed. The original Pre looks and felt somewhat cheap and hollow. Not so of the Pre 3, which has a sturdy feel to it that suggests it might be as good for driving a nail into a wall as it is for mobile web surfing. That new, large display really helps the phone compete with other platforms, and the larger keyboard suited my large hands quite well.

While the Pre 3 won't be out for some time yet, the phone seemed quick and smooth in operation, and the new webOS 2 features really raise the bar when it comes to intuitive multitasking. I've long been a fan of the webOS user interface, and I'm happy to say that things have only gotten better.

We're really looking forward to trying out a production Pre 3 when it hits the market in a few months.
